Welcome Back, Stoughton High. For the students attending here, we have entered another realm in our educational experience. A new year brings new change, new goals and new opportunities. In many ways, this isn't necessarily bad .. or good either. Walking into the hallways, an upperclassmen may feel as though he or she is in the same Stoughton High.
Take a stroll by the gym, and one may see that this is not completely true. Our gym floorboards have been completely removed and replaced with new ones. This is very interesting to see since according to School Committee Chairman Eric Milgroon who said in an interview with the Stoughton Journal on January 14, 2010 " An additional budget reduction of $2.5 million will have a severe adverse impact on the Stoughton Public Schools affecting every single area."
In many ways, that seems to be true. Even at this very moment of us writing this article, it is a sad truth that the Knight school newspaper isn't funded by the school.
In many ways, our community has changed. We may not have a funded school newspaper but we do have a new principal. This is a very big change compared to the many that we have made this year. New leadership and authority always brings a sense of change or progressiveness. The students have to learn to adjust to everything. They need to work with others and work towards the common well-being of the intuition. The changes are working towards this goal. The new principal, new teaches, new policies, and new changes are the things that are changing Stoughton High School. For better or for worse, we strive to accommodate the yearly changes that need to be made .
And in a way, the whole atmosphere of Stoughton High has changed. With Mr.Colantonio, the students are able to have a fresh clean slate with the administration. It can be argued that this was very much needed. However, is this necessarily a good change?
Well, for one, the I.D., electronic and hat rule are being enforced. In many ways this shows that the change has shown some effectivity. The late/absent policy has now become a mandatory policy that all teachers must follow. This leads to more absences, and may lead to students failing classes due to this new policy. Some students that have troubles with transportation are appalled. The school policies seem to get more and more strict, like the Hat Policy. Now hats can not be worn anywhere in the building.
All of these changes are leading to a more effective Stoughton High school, but for how long will this last? We already had a staggering lunch line last year, and now it seems, in my opinion, that it has hit us hard ten-fold. I can barely walk through the doors of Stoughton High without being smashed to death in the morning by the crowd of students. Meanwhile, I sit in an Honors history class with about 11 people which is a very good size. However my comrade is squished in with 29 other students in the same Honors U.S. History 2 course that is scheduled in a different time.
So Overall, Stoughton has evolved not only in its school year, but the school in itself for the good and seemingly bad. Let's see if it can change some more for the good. But of course, change starts with the structure, which is the students. Many complain about what they don’t like about Stoughton High, but few do anything to change it. This should be another change for this 2010-2011 school year. We, the students, must be part of the change. Not only the change for our well-being, but for the well-being of our community. When our community succeeds, we all succeed. So hopefully, The changes in Stoughton High will improve our road to higher education and our future success.
